Adeel, they would have put the paranthesis if they wanted you to think of it as 3logxX(X+2).
Duaa, try converting to exponential/index form and see if the statement makes sense! That is what they mean by defined.
You could, as you said, try plugging in values of x to see if the statement would make sense. :)
